This infection is transmitted through sexual contact. This infection spreads to the following reasons:

• Unprotected vagina or anal sex
• Having oral sexual intercourse with a person with mouth ulcers and cold sores
• By sharing sex toys
• Having genital contact with the infected person

These causes are most likely to spread the infection. If the mother has herpes wound in the genital area during birth, then it is possible that the infection can happen to the child as well.
